OIPCB receives Travel Oregon Award for Infrastructure Development in the Charleston Marina RV Park
The Oregon International Port of Coos Bay (OIPCB) has successfully applied for and received a $12,750 grant from Travel Oregon to replace picnic tables in the Charleston Marina RV Park. OIPCB applied through Travel Oregon’s competitive grants program and was one of 29 recipients to receive a grant award. Travel Oregon awarded a total of $400,000 for local tourism projects throughout the state.
The OIPCB Charleston Marina Complex has a vast array of facilities that serve both the commercial and recreational fishing fleets. The Charleston RV Park is the ideal accommodation for those who enjoy outdoor recreation. The RV Park is centrally located within the Charleston Marina providing convenient access to fishing, crabbing, clamming or hiking for outdoor recreationists. There are over 100 RV spots and 3 yurts in the Charleston RV park with each spot equipped with a wooden picnic table. OIPCB is planning to replace 22 of these picnic tables with 17 6-foot recycled plastic picnic tables and 5 8-foot ADA picnic tables.
With the addition of ADA picnic tables, Charleston RV Park will be able to offer total accessibility and accommodations for Americans with Disabilities. OIPCB also decided to purchase recycled plastic picnic tables as they are more environmentally sustainable and cost-effective. Recycled plastic tables are made primarily of recycled milk jugs, keeping them out of landfills. In addition, they require less maintenance and upkeep since the recycled plastic does not erode or degrade as fast as wood withstanding the harsh weather conditions on the Oregon Coast.
“We thank Travel Oregon for their support in our efforts to maintain and upgrade the infrastructure at the Charleston RV park for a better and more inclusive experience for visitors to the Southern Oregon Coast.” Said John Buckley, Charleston Harbormaster.
The total project cost is estimated to be $15,000. This project will be the first step in steadily replacing all the picnic tables in the Charleston RV Park. As we move forward, focus on maintaining and upgrading the infrastructure in the whole Charleston Marina Complex will be a priority for OIPCB so that the Port can better serve both our commercial and recreational fishing fleets and visitors.
