OREGON'S BAY AREA

Education and Workforce Training

Oregon’s Bay Area is served by
Coos Bay Public Schools and the North Bend School District, which encompass six elementary schools, two middle schools, two high schools, one alternative high school and three charter schools. The districts serve the communities of Coos Bay, North Bend and Charleston and provide one of the highest quality education experiences in the Northwest.

Southwestern Oregon Community College (SOCC) serves the Bay Area on its 153-acre campus located within the city limits of Coos Bay.  Since its founding in 1961 the college has grown from 266 students to nearly 14,500 students annually. As a partner in the region’s economic development efforts, SOCC offers a wide range of educational and training opportunities including courses for: dislocated workers; under-employed persons training for new careers; local businesses and their employees; and other adults who are seeking continuing adult education.

The Oregon Institute of Marine Biology
has been teaching and conducting research in marine biology on the southern Oregon coast since 1924 when summer classes traveled to nearby Sunset Bay and used tents for dormitories and laboratories. Today, the Institute, which is now a part of the University of Oregon, offers year-round educational and research programs as well as summer teaching courses.
