In February 2005, the Oregon
International Port of Coos Bay completed Phase I of a
long-planned rail bridge rehabilitation. Total project costs

million, with funding from the federal government through
the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21),
the Oregon Economic & Community Development Department, the
Coos County (North Bay) Urban Renewal Agency and the
Regional Investment Board. Phase I consisted of repair and
replacement of structural steel components, rebuilding of a
support pier and installation of a new fendering system for
two piers.
Phase II will consist of
additional structural steel repair and replacement,
application of a protective coating system and other work as
needed. Estimated cost of Phase II is $12 million.
Project Status:
The Port has $8 million in funding available through the
federal Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient
Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA:LU)
and recently received an award of $4 million from the
ConnectOregon multimodal non-highway state
transportation system improvement initiative. Port staff
and the Oregon Department of Transportation are preparing
a Request For Proposal (RFP) for engineering services and
project quality assurance. Bid documents will be prepared
after selection of a project engineering firm.
