The
Port’s mission statement is to help
build a diversified, healthy, stable regional economy
through prudent management of its assets, by advocacy for
infrastructure improvements and collaboration with other
public and private entities. In concert with that
mission, we continue to establish partnerships in Charleston
to create aesthetic and economic benefits for the
community.
One of our
partnership projects, the Charleston Coastal and Ocean Life
Complex, has been designated an Oregon Solutions project by
Governor Kulongoski. The University of Oregon’s Oregon
Institute of Marine Biology (OIMB) approached the Port with
its vision for educational displays related to marine
biology proposed for a location on Port property. As the
project has moved forward, other entities have become
involved and are looking toward the project as an
opportunity to develop the space to support administrative
and research offices in the same or a nearby location.
Oregon Solution Team Members include OIMB, Coos County, the
Port, South Slough, Oregon Sea Grant, Coos Watershed
Association, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Oregon Dungeness Crab
Commission, the Governor’s Economic Revitalization Team, ODF&W,
Oregon Parks, Charleston Merchant Association, Charleston
Community Enhancement Corporation, Bandon Dunes and co-convenors
Senator Joanne Verger and Representative Arnie Roblan. It
is anticipated that project will increase tourism and
recreational opportunities by capitalizing on education and
assets throughout the area.
