For decades, the economy of the
southern Oregon coast was based on natural resources.
Although the wood products and fishing industries still play
an important role in the local economy, employment
throughout the Bay Area has diversified greatly during the
past 10 to 15 years to include technology and service
industries.
During
the past three years, people moving into the region have
exceeded those leaving; a major contributor to the area’s
economic health.
Marked
by the addition of more than 400 jobs, local business
leaders are enjoying a dramatic turnaround in Coos County’s
economy. An unemployment rate of just 6.4 percent – the
lowest level of unemployment the area has enjoyed in a
decade – adds to optimism about the region’s future.
